EMMANUEL COOPER AT RUTHIN CRAFT CENTRE

Pots by Emmanuel Cooper are featured in Long Playing Record - an exhibition at Ruthin Craft Centre celebrating the career of director, Philip Hughes.

Over the past thirty three years, Philip Hughes, director of the Ruthin Craft Centre, has supported the careers of hundreds of makers and promoted Contemporary Craft both nationally and internationally. To mark his retirement the centre has organised an exhibition Long Playing Record which brings together the work of a selected group of practitioners - including Emmanuel Cooper -  who have exhibited at Ruthin and includes some of the finest artist makers in ceramic, metal, textile, wood, glass and jewellery, from the late twentieth and early twenty first centuries.

The exhibition at Ruthin Craft Centre runs from the 18th January 2025 to the 30th March 2025. See details here

Emmanuel Cooper had a long association with Ruthin Craft Centre and Philip Hughes played a hugely significant role in promoting and celebrating his work as both potter and writer.  In June 1996, Ruthin Craft Centre created the touring exhibition 'Emmanuel Cooper' which  set out on a tour which was supposed to last eighteen months but in fact ran for six years taking in some seventeen venues,  receiving extensive press and television interest.

Following Emmanuel Cooper’s death in 2012, Ruthin Craft Centre created a major retrospective - 'Emmanuel Cooper  1938 - 2012’ - which also toured to Derby and London. This was accompanied by a 90 page full colour catalogue which included six essays examining aspects of his engagement with clay.

Over the years, Emmanuel Cooper was commissioned by Philip Hughes to write catalogue essays for exhibitions at Ruthin Craft Centre - including Ruth Duckworth; Walter Keeler, Mick Casson; Margaret and David Frith; David Binns and Martin Smith.
